Upward Stars ‘Play with Purpose’

Spartanburg, SC- The Upward Stars Center has been thriving since the fall of 2014. Their purpose is to promote the discovery of Jesus through sports.

Coach Curtis Wheeler is the program director of the Upward Stars Southeast Adidas Gauntlet team. The program has a 15-, 16- and 17-age group team.

Keenan athlete commits to Norfolk State University

By Jada Ramsey, Sports Writer 

Senior D’Montre’ Smith signed to Norfolk State University on February 7 for football.

“I am going to this school to major in Secondary Teaching,” he said.

This will be Plan B for Smith because his first is trying to get into the NFL.

Keenan’s athletic banquet a big success

At the end of the year, student athletes have an award ceremony at the athletic banquet. They receive their awards and get recognized for working hard and participating in a sport.
“I got MVP and all region; I was very ecstatic and also grateful,” Junior Day-sha Stewart, softball pitcher, said.

Coach Spotlight: Rivera brings new life to Keenan

Coach Pablo Rivera is the American Government, Economics and Foundations of US History teacher. He also is the assistant coach for the wrestling team and the head coach for the soccer team.

He has been coaching for two years.

An urban rivalry deceased?

W.J. Keenan and Eau Claire high schools have been at a now inactive rivalry for nearly 50 years.

“The Keenan and Eau Claire rivalry dates back to the late 70’s,” Mrs. Deidra Pompey, Keenan English teacher and graduate, said. “They were two urban schools in the district, and they were relatively close to each other.”
