The 2014 Keenan Athletic Banquet was a success. The banquet was held at Brookland Baptist Church.

Many athletes were recognized and awarded on the night.

Junior Kendrick Gathers, who received many awards from three different sports, was an outstanding student athlete.

“It felt great to receive all these awards because it shows how dedicated I am to my sports and that hard work actually pays off,” Gathers said.

The Keenan Raiders boys’ basketball team had a great showing at the banquet. The team had five All-Region players, including Senior Quinton Stroman, Freshmen Tariq Simmons and Juniors Kendrick Gathers, Jevonta Davis and Antwan Holmes. With four of the five returning, the Raiders have something to look forward to next season.  Simmons also won rookie of the year.

“It was a good feeling making All-Region my freshmen year and also winning Rookie of the Year was great. This comes to show that if you work hard, you will come out on top” Simmons said.

Even though there were a lot of athletes recognized, one athlete stood out the most. Senior D’Vaungh Kelley was named the Athlete of the Year. Kelley was the overall best athlete. He showed great leadership on and off the field, especially in the classroom, having a 3.5 grade point average (GPA).

“This was a very special award to me because I put in hard work on and off the field. I just feel honor and bless[ed] to receive this award,” Kelley said.
