Mr. Brandon Hopkins, Band Director of the Keenan Marching Raider Rubber Band, and the band members will be attending the National High Step Competition on November 12 and 13, in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The Marching Band has been practicing every week from 3:45 until 6:00 from Tuesday to Thursday.
“We are taking it a step at a time, building our foundation with all the talented kids we have in the program,” Hopkins said.
The National High Step Competition will have many bands from different states coming to compete.
“We see a lot of S.C. bands, but at nationals we see a lot of other talented bands, which allows us good exposure to others outside of South Carolina,” Hopkins said.
Band members have been putting in hard work, commitment and dedication.
“To prepare myself for the competition I have been proofreading, reading music and going over my rudiments,” Daequon Brown, Junior Snare Player, said.
Not only has the percussion been working hard for the competition, but so have the woodwinds and brass.
“I have been practicing more, remembering the music, doing my best and having fun,” Laurielle Gibson, Sophomore Clarinet Player, said.
The marching band believes without discipline, it’s like a boat on dry land.
“Preparing for nationals, I have been practicing hard, trying to remember all the formations and practicing marching,” Corey Stone, Senior Tenor Saxophone Player, said.
