In late April, girls who planned to play volleyball for the 2011-2012 school year started their spring conditioning. With this preparation comes intense workouts, drills and physical training. Volleyball conditioning includes player evaluations, summer practice and team tryouts. Team members prepared for the upcoming season by running 800 meters to a mile in either the track or gym, 30 minutes of cardio with Insanity, and 1 hour of net work and drills.
“It’s a tough practice to begin with; then it gradually slows down,” Junior Toni Foster said.
On a scale of 1 to 10, Coach Gwen Wilcher rates spring workouts a 6, summer workouts a 7 or 8 and season workouts, which begin in early August, a 9 or 10.
“Conditioning makes us very prepared and keeps us in shape for the upcoming season,” Sophomore Sharhonda Albea said.
With a total of 2 hours and 15 minutes of workouts, the Lady Raiders are training to be the champions of 2011.
